I first joined Triple U in 1991 when the studios were in Ernest Street. My reason for becoming a member was a blues show on Wednesday nights, which I thought was worth supporting. No radio stations in the area played 2 hours of blues on a regular basis.
In December 1992, a friend, Bob Lording had a show on Fridays. He asked me if I would do his show for 6 weeks, while he was on holiday. I had some rudimentary training, and went to air for the first time on 1-Feb-93, for 2 hours – a baptism of fire. I elected to play rock and blues (old to electric) from my era, the 60’s and 70’s I must have been doing something right, because after two years, the show was permanently extended to three hours from 1pm to 4pm, 13 years to date. The music I play has a good following in the Shoalhaven, and for me, it is a great hobby. Where else could I play the music I love for three hours with nobody telling me to turn it down or play something else !!! In 1995 I offered to do Saturday breakfast 7 'til 9 for a few months and have been doing that ever since.
Barry Backbeach, an old friend, joined me some time in 1995 to present a Surf Report and he just stayed. He is an old surfer from way back, using 10ft. boards. He is President of the East Wandandian Sailing Club and I have a feeling he thinks he is more popular than the music.
